The cost agreement
Ask for the proposed scope of work, charging basis and estimate in writing. Check whether a quote is fixed, hourly, conditional or otherwise limited. Ask what may cause the estimate to change.
Fees and expenses
A lawyer’s professional work and third-party expenses are different charges. Ask which reports or filing fees might be required and whether they are payable along the way or later.
Questions to take to the conversation
Who pays expenses if the claim does not succeed? Is there an uplift? What happens if I change providers or discontinue? Could I be responsible for another party’s costs? Ask how you can question a bill.
Keep the paperwork
Retain the signed agreement, estimates, invoices and any variations. Ask for an explanation before accepting an unexpected charge. Fee rules and available assistance differ by jurisdiction and claim type.
